Broadcast live from the Bord Gis Energy Theatre, the reaction was swift and overwhelmingly positive with many viewers taking to Twitter to voice their approval of the show with Centenary trending worldwide on the social media site. The Independent described the one off cultural celebration as “chilling and beautiful” stating that it “struck a chord with many viewers”.

The special television event was created and Exec Produced by Cilian Fennell who described the concert as a “modern telling of the story of our foundation as a Republic and the struggles and sacrifices of those who built the country we have today”. Alan Byrne directed while Niamh N Churnin produced. TVM were the OB provider with Helen Arnold serving as OB Co Ordinator.

Spliced throughout the show were VT inserts which were produced by South Wind Blows and Tyrone Productions. The VT Editor was Clare Killane.

The event also featured dance troupes from across the island of Ireland, including CoisCim and aerialists Fidget Feet. They took centre stage on the night along with the RT Concert Orchestra and choirs from around the country to perform songs that have become part of the Irish psyche. As part of the show Danny O’Reilly from The Coronas joined forces with his sister Risn O and cousin Aoife Scott to record a very special version of Grace live in Kilmanham Gaol.

President Michael D. Higgins was also in attendance at the Bord Gis Energy Theatre and paid tribute to all the Irish rebels who died during the Rising in both Irish and English.

Speaking about the event, Managing Director for RT Television Glen Killane said: “Arts and culture are at the very heart of the Irish identity so it’s fitting that ‘Centenary’ is the culmination of RT 1916, to reflect on the Rising itself and the nation we have become. RT is very proud to present Centenary, telling our nation’s story through music, poetry, dance and song in collaboration with some of Ireland’s best creative talents.”
