timberland boots size 9 Carlisle’s gourmet burger restaurant closes

Carlisle’s gourmet burger restaurant has closed due to lack of interest.

Belted, in Warwick Road, opened in the former post office building in 2014 to much fanfare.

Despite high hopes and having what the company described as one of the best locations in the city the firm has confirmed it has called it a day and closed the city branch.

Bosses say they instead plan to focus their attention on larger cities to develop its brand.

A private agreement has been reached between the burger chain and Burge Halston Ltd,

which owns the building, to take back the premises.

In a statement issued to the News Star, a spokesman for Belted said: “Belted is now closed having enjoyed three years looking after the good people of Carlisle and beyond.

Maybe in the ‘bigger cities’ where they’re going to ‘develop their brand’ they’ll get more footfall and people who will just walk in from the street and are willing to pay over the odds for average burgers. There are smaller food outlets in carlisle whose burgers are far superior AND they’re not as expensive. If you call your burgers gourmet you’ve got to back it up with some fairly decent grub. Nothing to write home about I’m afraid. Must try harder!

infant timberlands Carlisle woman’s life made misery

A woman considered fleeing from her home after her life was made a misery by a controlling boyfriend.

Carlisle Crown Court court heard how Daniel Norman, 29, has a history of committing harassment offences against woman even before he turned his attention to Emma Downie.

“She describes the relationship initially as being satisfactory,” said the prosecutor. “The defendant then started to become violent and abusive towards her.”

The barrister outlined how over the following months Norman began a course of conduct that included numerous unwanted and abusive phone calls and text messages.

In the week before August 16 of that year, he moved back in and for two or three days things were fine. The barrister continued: “After that, the controlling behaviour started again.”

On one occasion, as the police drove past, he hid under a bed in her house, but grabbed her leg so she could not to answer the door when the officers knocked. But she broke free.

Mr Toal added: “As she opened the door, she was shaking violently and scared. He was arrested but since his arrest he’s been sending her letters, asking her to write, asking for money, and threatening to kill himself if she won’t have him back.”

In her victim personal statement, Miss Downie said she had been unable to sleep because of his constant calls. “I’m scared to go out of the house,” she said. She added that she had considered moving into a hostel to escape from the defendant.

The court was told Norman had numerous previous harassment offences on his record.

Kim Whittlestone, for Norman, said the defendant had served the equivalent of a 10 month sentence on remand and he had both learning and emotional difficulties following a significant trauma in his youth.

“He needs some form of intervention,” said the barrister.

After hearing the details of the case, Recorder Julie Clemitson imposed a three year community order which includes a six month overnight curfew, and 40 days of rehabilitation.

Carlisle United have signed veteran winger Jamal Campbell Ryce in a last ditch transfer window deal.

The 34 year old joined the Blues from Barnet on a short term contract until the end of the season.

United captured Campbell Ryce’s signature a minute before Wednesday’s deadline and finally received confirmation that the paperwork had cleared with the EFL this afternoon.

It means the experienced player has joined the Blues in time for him to be involved in Saturday’s trip to Wycombe.

Barnet said United had paid a “nominal undisclosed fee” for the former Jamaica international, who is reunited with manager Keith Curle, who signed him for Notts County in 2012.

The well travelled player, who has made 26 appearances and scored four goals for League Two’s bottom side this term, has featured for Sheffield United, Bristol City and Barnsley among a host of clubs during his career.

“I had Jamal at Notts County he’s creative, instinctive, manipulative with the ball, can handle the ball, can be a link player and he can score goals,” Curle said.

“He understands his role whether that be a number 11, a number seven, a 10, or a central midfield player.

“He’s a good technician give him the ball and he’ll keep it, manipulate it, and in wide areas he knows what his role is.

“He cane be very creative, he understands the needs of players around him, when to set it, when to play it, when to deliver.

“He’s got a wealth of experience, and still has a hunger of the game which is pleasing, and he’s got a desire to play for me again.

“We’ve consistently kept in contact since my time at Notts County, I’ve got admiration of how he plays the game and his attitude towards the game.”

Campbell Ryce has made 526 appearances in his career, scoring 47 goals, and could face his former club when United go to The Hive on February 20.

He will join other attacking additions, with Cole Stockton, Kris Twardek and deadline day loanee Ashley Nadesan having already signed.

“The areas we were lacking were in wide areas, pace and mobility,” Curle said.

“We now have the physical presence of Cole Stockton and Richie Bennett, the creativity and pace of Jamal, Ashley and Kris, and Hallam Hope, who can play anywhere across the front three.

“With the options I have I could play four, three, two or one up front and have all bases covered.”

It sees further changes to the United squad after a window that saw Sam Cosgrovesold to Aberdeen for around 40,000 and another frontman, Shaun Miller, loaned to Crewe, with teenager Cameron Salkeld also loaned to Annan.

Curle hopes the window work, which also included the loan arrival of Everton keeper Louis Gray, can help his team narrow the nine point gap to the play off places.

On Fleetwood striker Nadesan, Curle said: “There’s more to come from this lad.

“He has a good turn of pace and work ethic, and he is different to what we’ve got.

“He likes to work off shoulders and if he gets away from someone, he’s got good goalscoring ability he comes alive in the box.”

Tom Miller, who limped out of a comeback game for the reserves against Fleetwood on Tuesday, is out of tomorrow’s game, with Curle saying the defender is set to have a scan.

No move on deadline day, meanwhile, materialised for defender Mark Ellis despite interest earlier in the week from Tranmere.

“There was interest from a couple of clubs regarding Mark from the National League and League Two, but nothing that suited Mark at this time,” the manager said. “Tranmere said potentially they were going to look somewhere else.”

Curle also said United received a bid for a member of his squad but the player turned down the chance to leave. “He wanted to stay, to help us get to the play offs and get promoted that’s the response you want from the players you’ve brought in,” Curle said.

timberland custom Carlisle Utd boss Keith Curle seeks help from Sheffield Utd ahead of FA Cup replay against Sheffield Wednesday

timberland stratham Carlisle Utd boss Keith Curle seeks help from Sheffield Utd ahead of FA Cup replay against Sheffield Wednesday

Carlisle United boss Keith Curle has sought the help of Sheffield Wednesday’s bitter city rivals in a bid to send the Owls crashing out of the FA Cup tonight.

The Blues boss revealed he was set to speak to Sheffield United’s management team for some pointers ahead of the third round replay (Hillsborough, 7.45pm).

Curle, a former Blades player and Sheffield resident, hopes the research carried out by United manager Chris Wilder ahead of the Sheffield derby last Friday could come in useful for his League Two team tonight.

“I watched bits and pieces of that game and I will also ring up Chrissy Wilder and [assistant] Alan Knill and get a copy of their match reports that they’ve had done for the last two or three weeks,” Curle said.

United are set to take a big travelling support to south Yorkshire tonight as they seek a dramatic victory which, according to chief executive Nigel Clibbens, could be worth 100,000 to the club.

That would include 67,500 prize money if they can see off Jos Luhukay’s side and earn a fourth round home clash against Stevenage or Reading, who also replay tonight.

Curle is unlikely to tinker much with the side that beat Crewe on Saturday, although fit again Luke Joyce could be an option if the manager wants to bolster his midfield.

Carlisle’s boss admits United will have to be at the top of their game to stand a chance of progressing.

He added: “Can we go and play open, expansive game of football and match them man for man? No, we can’t.

“There has to be realisation that it’s a cup tie and we need a game plan. We need to make sure that everybody will be able to understand that, play their part and understand their roles.

“Then it’s a cup tie roll your sleeves up and get dug in.”

Curle also believes he will be targeted for stick by the home supporters in light of his playing days with Sheffield United.

The Blues boss said: “I don’t think will take lot to entice the Sheffield Wednesday fans to turn on me. They are a partisan club, and there is a massive rivalry between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.

“I won’t hide, but I won’t react. This is my profession. People pay their money and can say what they want, to a point.

“My focus will be getting the best out of our players and giving them the attention they need to give them the best opportunity of getting something out of the game.

timberland 88580 Carillion chiefs branded ‘delusional’ after grilling over company’s collapse

mens timberland sandals Carillion chiefs branded ‘delusional’ after grilling over company’s collapse

Executives at defunct construction giant Carillion have been branded “delusional” and accused of playing the blame game by MPs, as a damning report revealed how company bosses presided over a string of failures that led to its collapse.

A raft of former board members faced MPs from the Business and Pensions Committees, who pushed bosses to take responsibility over the company’s rapid decline.

MPs Rachel Reeves and Frank Field who are co chairs of the joint committee inquiry said the executives were “a series of delusional characters” who “maintained that everything was hunky dory until it all went suddenly and unforeseeably wrong”.

“We heard variously that this was the fault of the Bank of England, the foreign exchange markets, advisers, Brexit, the snap election, investors, suppliers, the construction industry, the business culture of the Middle East and professional designers of concrete beams.”

Ms Reeves and Mr Field said everything they had seen “points the finger in another direction to the people who built a giant company on sand in a desperate dash for cash.”

A freshly released report compiled by Carillion just days before its collapse in January showed the company was well aware of a growing pile of problems at the doomed firm.

“The group had become too complex with an overly short term focus, weak operational risk management and too many distractions outside of our ‘core’,” the presentation said.

It also highlighted “poor planning of effective contract controls and monitoring”, “insufficient understanding of and adherence to contract requirements”, and a “lack of ownership of issues”.

During the committee hearing, former chief executive Keith Cochrane admitted he should have acted sooner before the company’s collapse, but claimed that all the decisions he took were in Carillion’s best interest, while former finance director Zafar Khan defended his track record over his nine months at the firm.

He said: “I don’t believe I was asleep at the wheel because as soon as I came into the role, we were looking to tackle the issues and the key focus of my time in the role was to bring net debt down.”

He added: “I believe I did everything that I could have done, essentially.”

The executives brushed off suggestions that Carillion was looking out for shareholders at the expense of employees, having continued to pay dividends while the company was struggling under the weight of a hefty pension deficit last cited at 587 million.

But Mr Cochrane said cancelling the 50 million dividend payment in 2017 would not have had a significant impact on the company’s finances.

Carillion’s schemes are being transferred to the public Pension Protection Fund (PPF), which means eligible staff are likely to receive just a portion of their promised pensions.

The former finance director went on to pin the company’s collapse on issues including Brexit, saying it compounded the difficulties in replacing a number of contracts that were coming to a close.

Another former boss, Richard Howson, claimed the company was “well run” but that there were “things that I would have done differently” while another former finance chief, Richard Adam, said that he knew Carillion was in a “challenging position” when he left the firm in December 2016.

But both were accused of offering “just words” when it came to apologies over the collapse of Carillion.

MPs detailed bonuses paid to former chief executive Mr Howson 293,000 in 2015 and 245,000 in 2016 and former finance chief Mr Adam, who received 140,000 in 2016 and 215,000 a year earlier. Mr Howson said he was comfortable with the size of his bonus and said it was justified “for the attributes that I earned it for”.

“I know there will be a review of whether those bonuses were properly paid in line with processes and if the outcome of that review says that the bonuses should be paid back by any extent then I’ll abide by that decision,” he said.

However, neither confirmed that they would voluntarily give up part of their bonus in light of the collapse.

Philip Green told MPs said he ultimately took the blame for Carillion’s eventual liquidation.

Mr Green said: “The collapse is the responsibility of the chairman and the board. As chairman of the board, I take full responsibility.”

He added: “We went into the year with too much debt. Contracts deteriorated rapidly and because we didn’t have that wiggle room, that was a significant factor.”

The disease is typically contracted in tropical environments by walking barefoot in sand or on moist soil. Near microscopic nematode larvae enter mammalian hosts by migrating through the skin.

Windsor residents Eddie Zytner and his girlfriend Katie Stephens need crutches after both contracted the parasitic condition called cutaneous larva migrans hookworms on a vacation in the Dominican Republic in January 2018.

Zytner said he and Stephens walked barefoot on beaches from the very first day of their week long stay at the IFA Villas Bavaro All Inclusive Resort and Spa on Playa Bavaro in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

An official at the hotel, who declined to give her name when contacted Friday, said the resort has received no other inquiries or complaints about hook worms or guests complaining of itchy feet. The Star is unaware of any other vacationers to the region reporting similar problems.

Although they experienced some irritation during their trip, it wasn until they returned to Windsor on Jan. 18 that the infection manifested and their feet took a grotesque turn.

timberland classic boot Careers with a Bachelor’s Degree

black timberland shoes Careers with a Bachelor’s Degree

Careers with a Bachelor’s DegreeNearly 50 percent of all psychology graduates at the baccalaureate level will seek a full time job immediately after they graduate. The good news is that of the psychology majors entering the labor force one year after graduation, 90 percent were employed. After two years, it was 94 percent.

Psychology is the second most popular undergraduate major behind business administration. In 1996, about 65,000 college seniors graduated with a degree in psychology, but many were not necessarily interested in a career as a psychologist. In fact, the National Center for Education Statistics (1993) reports that 20 percent of psychology baccalaureate recipients work in social services or public affairs, 21 percent in administrative support, 14 percent in education, 10 percent in business, 10 percent in sales, 9 percent in service personnel, and 5 percent in health professions. An additional 3 percent find themselves working in computer science and an equal percentage in biological sciences.

The career of “psychologist” is not open to the BA or BS psychology graduate. American psychology has clearly made the decision that the doctorate and the master’s degree in school psychology is the entry level qualification. Therefore, we cannot honestly speak of the baccalaureate in psychology as preparation for a career in psychology. Similarly, a baccalaureate degree in political science does not qualify an individual to practice law, and a baccalaureate in biology does not make one a physician.

All this is to say that the study of psychology at the bachelor level is fine preparation for many other professions. Indeed, a liberal arts education with a psychology major enhances those skills critical to job success. These are:Researchers contacted private employers and found a strong positive response to employees with human relations skills coupled with research skills. Other research indicates that employers give the highest ratings to individuals with strengths in writing proposals and reports, applying knowledge to identify and solve problems, conducting interviews, and performing statistical analyses.

The argument that a psychology degree is good preparation for many careers is supported by a recent report from the National Science Foundation on bachelor’s degree recipients in psychology. The work functions of these graduates covered a broad range: 30% in management or administration, 28% in sales and/or professional services,
timberland classic boot Careers with a Bachelor's Degree
16% in teaching, and 12% in production or inspection.

Looking specifically at college graduates’ prospects in business, two major studies examined the relationship between college experiences and management potential. Of all the educational experiences considered, undergraduate major was the strongest predictor of managerial performance and progress. Psychology majors fell within the category of social science. This group had the best overall record, with particular strengths in interpersonal and verbal skills and motivation to advance.

The one general weakness of social science majors was in quantitative ability. Psychology, however, is an exception to this and provides an excellent quantitative background. This attests to the value of the Department’s policy of requiring competence in math, statistics, and research methods.

What Business Employers are Looking for

Eison (1988) had 362 representatives of business and industry who were actively interviewing college students complete a questionnaire on 15 factors pertaining to hiring psychology graduates. The 5 most important were: personality of students, grades in major courses, nature of non college jobs held, overall grade point average, and awards/honors/publications.

Similarly, employers participating in a survey conducted by the American Management Society were asked to select from among nine traits the most important characteristic of candidates applying for an entry level college graduate position. The percent rating each item as most significant was as follows (from Pilla, 1984):Overall, psychology graduates are entering all kinds of occupations. The bachelor’s degree in psychology affords flexible employment. You are obviously not limited to positions in mental and psychological services. Your degree can lead to a variety of worthwhile and exciting careers. It is up to you to decide the direction to take.

Students often think only of mental hospitals as employment sites for those interested in work related to psychology. Listed below are many types of agencies and settings. In all of these, persons with bachelor’s degrees have found interesting and challenging positions which utilize their knowledge of psychology.

Community Relations Officer: works either for business or government in promoting good relations with the local community.

Affirmative Action Officer: works for recruitment and equal opportunities for minorities; employed by business, industries, schools and government.

Management Trainee: plans and supervises operations of a business concern.

Media Buyer: researches products and audiences to select most effective media for advertising.

Health Educator: gives public information about health and disease.

Psychological Technician: administers routine tests, helps with patients under supervision of a psychologist.

REACTION: “The Tories and Liberals ignored the size of the knock on effect of public spending cuts on economic growth. Between them they allowed (George) Osborne to tank the economy. It is doubtful that even Osborne would have cut public spending when he did in 2010 if he had any idea of the damage and misery his budget judgment would cause. George Osborne has as much economic knowledge as a stick of rhubarb. It is time for Cameron to steer the economy away from the rocks rather than talking about sinking or swimming.” Paul Kenny, GMB general secretary

by Andy Jackson, PA 10/10/2012 1:01:27 PM

REACTION: “The Prime Minister is right to recognise that we need a new model economy, one that is based on a strong private sector, where businesses can grow and compete globally. A thriving economy is central to the UK’s future. We cannot have a good education system, pensions, the NHS and public services without a strong private sector that creates the wealth to afford them. We support the Government’s aim of deficit reduction, but this is not a growth plan in itself; we also need policies that will boost our stagnating economy.” John Longworth, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce

by Andy Jackson, PA 10/10/2012 1:06:23 PM

Well, that brings an end to our live coverage of the Conservative Party conference. Prime Minister David Cameron has told us that it’s time to “sink or swim, do or decline” as the UK faces an “hour of reckoning”. But rest assured that we are “on the right track” to meet the economic challenge. We can weather the storm through “hard work” and “strong families”. So call your mum but do so only in your allocated tea break. Thanks for joining us, and good luck to you all.

Amy Frazier and KOIN 6 News Staff OREGON CITY, Ore. (KOIN) Jack Eichhorn would give anything to see his stepsister Megan O’Meara Clark again.

On July 5, 2013, they were on a float trip on the Clackamas River upstream from Carver Park when she jumped in to cool off. Her body was recovered 3 days later from about 15 feet of water, not far from where she went for a swim. The 26 year old was not wearing a life vest.

“I feel like I failed her as an older brother,” Eichhorn told KOIN 6 News.

Thursday was the first time in nearly 2 years Eichhorn returned to the spot where she suddenly disappeared.

“Unfortunately we didn’t bring life jackets,” he said. “If we had had life jackets on I think we could have prevented this tragedy.”

Her father, Rob O’Meara, will never forget the call that Jack and his friends couldn’t find Meagan.

“You know, you’re grasping for that thing. Maybe she’s alive, she’s going to be OK,” O’Meara said.

He said the water at the spot where she went under “acts like a whirlpool. You can’t tell from the top, but once you get in it sucks you down.”

After 2 days, rescue crews called off the search. On the third day, he spotted her underwater.

“I don’t want people to have to go through what I went through and have to find their daughter.

It bothers them to see so many people on the river without life jackets, especially with 5 recent drownings in our area.

“It’s hard to even to go the river, and then hearing about these other tragedies that happen to other families,” O’Meara said. “I think it’s time to do something about it, and that’s what we’re doing. We’re giving away these life jackets so this didn’t happen for no reason.”

On July 5, the second anniversary of Meagan’s death, the O’Meara family will be giving away more than 250 life jackets at Barton Park. That’s more than twice as many as they gave away last year thanks to donations through their Meg’s Moments for Life Jackets Facebook page and their GoFundMe effort.

“If we just save one life with what we’re doing, it just makes the family happy,” O’Meara said. “It’s our way of giving back for her.”

Magnum in Motion, One in 8 Million, etc.)

“He told me he doesn’t know, but I’m not totally convinced,” Young says. “Even if he didn’t know, I think he could find out. But that’s one of the hardest and most frustrating things about my job. Someone could get shot on a street corner with 500 people watching, and you’d be lucky to get five to tell you what they saw. People just don’t want to get involved. You can imagine how frustrating it is for the victim’s family.”

Dorsey says he’ll stand by his story for the rest of his life.

“I could see why they would say I knew who did it, because it’s my neighborhood,” Dorsey says. “But it was dark out, I was running as fast as I could and I didn’t recognize the voice. I’m sure someone in the neighborhood knows what happened, but they’re not going to talk about it.

“The way I see it is, somebody is always getting robbed in our neighborhood, and the drug dealers don’t like that. They work hard selling drugs 24/7, trying to make money. And if someone is trying to rob someone, that’s just like an enemy coming into their territory. Someone saw what looked like another person getting robbed and they took care of it.”

A month in jail

Despite Dorsey’s denials, the police weren’t about to let him go. He spent nearly a month in the Baltimore City Detention Center. The first night he was there, the other inmates heard his cell door slam and they began whooping and shouting at him through the darkness.

Who’s that down in Cell 13?

What you in for, homeboy? Murder? You kill my boy?

You better pass down those Timberland boots of yours, or you’ll be sorry.

But when the lights came on that next morning, Dorsey could hardly believe it.

“I knew half the guys in there,” Dorsey says. “They were all like, Hey Magic, that you? Hey everybody, this guy is cool. Don’t nobody mess with him. He’s definitely on my basketball team come rec time.’ ”

Even in jail, everybody wanted to see the kid from Dunbar play. So he pulled out his best moves and watched the crowd go wild.

“The first rec period we had, it seemed just about everybody was there watching me play basketball,” Dorsey says. “Everyone was lined up around the court to see the game. The [correctional officers] were slipping me sunflower seeds and extra Snickers bars and telling me they hoped I got out soon.”

Except, he didn’t get out soon. The days dragged on until they turned into weeks. Dorsey passed the time by helping illiterate inmates read letters from home, and then tried to show them how to write back. One night he prayed so much, he broke down in tears for the first time in years.

“Even with all the stuff I’ve been through, I never cry,
timberland boot sale Daryl Dorsey Murder
” Dorsey says. “But for some reason I did that night. My aunt told me to pray and to really mean it this time. She told me if I didn’t do anything, then God would work it out. I prayed so hard, and I told myself that if I got out of there, I was going to take advantage of the second chance God gave me.”

Says Garris: “I could tell he was scared. I just told him what my momma always told me: Believe in prayer and that God is real. If you know you’re innocent, God will take care of it. I think he finally accepted that.”

Dorsey’s luck was about to change. Well known Baltimore attorney Warren A. Brown heard about the case and agreed to defend Dorsey free of charge.

“My first love is my wife, but my second love is the Northwood youth football program,” Brown says. “I’ve done a lot of coaching in the league, and one of the parents told me there was a former Northwood football player, now at Dunbar, locked up and charged with murder. They said he was incredibly talented, so I went out on a limb for him.”

Dorsey was being held without bail, but Brown had it reduced to $5,000, then paid it out of his own pocket. He soon convinced prosecutors they had no case against Dorsey if he wasn’t the shooter, and they released him after 28 days.

“I told him when he got out, You got a taste of that nasty jail. Now make sure you don’t ever end up back there,’ ” Brown says.

On Dec. 29, 1998, the charges were dismissed, Dorsey’s record expunged.

“I was so happy,” Garris says. “But I told him, don’t thank me, thank God. He was by your side.”

Young says the case is now considered inactive.

Passing on the goodwill

Dorsey quickly learned how hard it is to catch up after falling behind in life. The month in jail had wrecked his grades at Dunbar, so he transferred to Southern, where he played basketball and got his grades up, then transferred back to Dunbar.

Dorsey’s brilliance during football season when he accumulated 3,500 all purpose yards and scored 17 touchdowns was overshadowed by the fact that he couldn’t score higher than 840 on the SAT. With his grade point average, to qualify for the Division I A football scholarship Florida State had offered, he needed a score of 920.

GWINN A new DARE program has been initiated in Gwinn Area Community Schools as of Thursday, according to a press release from the Forsyth Township Police Department.

The program is jointly funded by the police department and school district.

The funding allowed Sgt. Jesse Cadwell to attend 80 hours of training over two weeks to become a DARE instructor. Cadwell attended the training in Virginia this past fall.

Starting this semester, the DARE program will be taught to all fourth grade students in the Gwinn school district. The DARE program seeks to give students the tools to make informed decisions about substance use, as well as many other important life choices.

are) excited to help students develop that skill set, Forsyth Township Police Chief Gordon Warchock said.

Warchock cited the nationwide opioid epidemic as one important reason for bringing the DARE program back to Gwinn Area Community Schools.

Warchock said the message back in schools to help young people is of major importance at this time. the message gets through to even a small percentage of students, that a win for us,

The DARE organization recently partnered with the University of Michigan to redesign the program. The first evaluation of the program was published last fall in the scientific journal Addictive Behaviors. This preliminary test showed students enrolled in the program were more likely to resist peer pressure, as well as confidently refuse cigarettes.

The study also found students in DARE had increased ability to make knowledgable and informed decisions.

not the same DARE message as people in them got years ago, Warchock said.

DARE had been taught in schools across Marquette County in the past, but the program has been absent from many schools and law enforcement agencies in the past decade.

Warchock noted that they hope to have Cadwell bring DARE programming to other grades in the future. The DARE program has segments for students of all ages, with programming for kindergarten through high school.

The program will serve students from Forsyth, West Branch,

North Myrtle Beach, SC NORTH MYRTLE BEACH (WMBF) More than 350 fifth graders at North Myrtle Beach Intermediate School will graduate from the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program Friday. They say they are trying to reach students early before they are bombarded with even more pressures at the middle and high school levels.Principal Trevor Strawderman at North Myrtle Beach High School says it is a different world for many of his students these days.”I think at the high school level pressures have become more intense, more widespread,” Strawderman said. “We don see it with just a certain element of students anymore.”Senor Kody Rowles agreed: “When you talk about drugs here, it around. There definitely talk around.”DARE officials say the talk is not just in the high schools. Fifth grader Xavier Clarida says even at the intermediate level kids are hearing about drugs. Classmate Brynn Strawderman agrees.”Kids in the middle school even use drugs,” she said. “I got friends in the sixth grade who will go to the girls bathroom and get offered cigarettes.””The earlier we can get to these kids the better,” Strawderman said. “When we teaching about drugs at the high school level, we too late.”They say the DARE program is about teaching kids how to make good decisions and that decisions have consequences.”After you do drugs or anything bad you could have social consequences, legal consequences, or health consequences,” Brynn Strawderman explained. She says the social consequences are what worry her the most.DARE Officer Julie Smith says the fear of gossip and being ostracized hits home.”They understand social consequences much easier than the legal or health because those are long term that they cant quite grasp it,” she explained. “But they can grasp those social consequences real easy.”Smith says showing the kids the effects of drugs at a young age and taking away some of the mystery helps to prepare them to stand up to peer pressure.”They curious about it. They want to know what it might look like. Not only would they think about doing it because they want to show off or be cool, but they curious about it,” Smith said. “So I try to make them understand that these are the consequences of it, this is what it looks like. So, is it worth the consequences of it?”Senior Kody Rowles thinks fifth grade is a great time to start bringing up the subject of self esteem and peer pressure.”They have to start thinking about it because when it presents itself in front of them they have to learn to turn it down,” Kody said.Another big concern is the trend towards misusing prescription drugs.”I think with the availability of prescription medicine, that becoming a larger concern,” Strawderman said.”The prescription drugs are available to the kids,” Smith said. “A lot of the stuff is in grandma or mom medicine cabinet where they have ready access to it.”They say what is so concerning is that many students have the misperception that somehow prescription drugs are less dangerous or less taboo because they are prescribed by a doctor, even if it was not prescribed for them. The DARE program is in its 19th year in North Myrtle Beach. Smith says the program is so important to the city that they place their officer outside the city limits in the intermediate school so that they can make sure they reach students with the tools to make wise decisions.15 year old who went missing from Conway Medical Center found safe15 year old who went missing from Conway Medical Center found safeUpdated: Thursday, March 8 2018 11:26 PM EST2018 03 09 04:26:34 GMT
